I brought in my Singer Stylist machine (1970s era) on Saturday November 1st to have a thread holder pin put on. I was told that he could bring in a couple to see what would fit and I suggested that I will just leave the machine to make it easier to find one. I was told that I would get a call back the following Tuesday.
On Wednesday I called to ask about my machine. I was told that it wasn’t timed and looked like there was never a maintenance check done on it and that is why it wouldn’t sew. I told him that I used the machine the day before I brought it in and that I asked for the thread pin to put on. He said that a thread pin would be $1.99 and if I wanted to do the maintenance there was a coupon out so it was only $69.99. I was in the middle of something else so I told him that I would call back to let him know. I called back 30 minutes later and told him that I didn’t want to do the maintenance right now and to just put the thread pin on. He said that there were two, a metal one and plastic one. The metal one was $5.99 and the plastic one was $2.99. I told him that he said it was $1.99 and he said that he didn’t have that particular one in. Knowing something about the machine, I know that the pins are plastic and not metal, so I told him the plastic one and I would pick up the machine the next day.
On Thursday the 6th I went to pick up the machine. I was in a little bit of a hurry so I paid the $3.12 and left. When I was putting the machine in the car I noticed that it wasn’t the correct pin holder for the machine. The one for the machine is just a stick-like pin and this one had a plastic guard on it. I also notice that one of the thread holder holes was damaged; it was now missing the adjustment ring and had glue around it. I brought it back in and complained to the woman. She put the person whom I am assuming was working on the machine on speaker phone and had me speak with him. I told him that the other hold is now damaged, it is missing the adjustment ring, and there is glue on the machine. He told me that he didn’t have the correct one in and he would have had to order it. I asked him why he didn’t tell me that he didn’t have it in when I called and was told that if I wanted a refund I could have one. I told the woman that I wanted a refund and she had to pull very hard to get the thread holder out. When I talked to the woman asking why there is glue on the machine, she proceeded to say that they have no reason the take the ring and that there isn’t glue on the machine. ??? I took the machine home.
Here are a few things I realized when I got home. Yes, it was glue. I scraped it off with a razor blade and I know dried glue when I see it. Also, when I took off the top cover there was plastic shavings inside the machine directly under the damaged holder.
I would never recommend this place after my experience for sewing machines. I expect one thing when I take anything in anywhere, that the job will be done correctly. Their inability to not take responsibilities for their mistakes is even worse. I was hoping to restore this machine since it was a present from my grandmother. I drove 20 miles to have this place find the parts, now I will have to spend more money fixing their mistake.
